A GOLDEN EGG #12

Where ever you are in the world the time is always – NOW!

This is the advertising slogan for a well known mobile phone network provider that greeted me at Heathrow Airport on route to Ireland recently. It resonated with me. The reality is there is no time like the present to simply get on and …. DO IT NOW!

We are already into February. I’m wondering what has happened to your New Year’s Resolutions? That’s if you even made them? If not, what are your plans for the year? How are they progressing?

Most people find that by February they are only a distant memory of failure!

"Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible."
St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226)

On a recent workshop, a delegate said that he no longer made New Year’s resolutions because he never kept them. So he resolved never to make any more! This resolution he managed to stick to. Strange that – isn’t it!!!

Many New Year’s resolutions fail because they focus on what someone wants to give up or stop, rather than what they want to become or achieve. For example if you want to ‘stop smoking’ your brain has to first focus on the smoking part. This makes it difficult for you to actually stop. Better to focus on ‘becoming healthy’. If you choose to ‘lose weight’ your brain focuses on weight! So instead focus on ‘becoming a size 14 and / or weighing 10 stone’.

This slight switch in focus will help you achieve better results in sticking to the resolutions and plans you have.

So as you contemplate 2006 how can you ensure you stick to your life and career resolutions or goals?

As Winston Churchill said - "Never give in, never give in, never, never, never."

Below are some simple steps to help you easily and positively define your goals and then effortlessly take action towards success

  1.

Write down specifically what it is you want to achieveWrite it positively and in the present tense with a date you want to have achieved it . (Remember focus on what you want to achieve– like becoming healthy). This is your GOAL.

  2. How will you know you have achieved this? What will you see and hear around you? How will you feel?

  3.

Write down why do you want this?

  4. Now list all the benefits of having achieved this. How will your life and business be positively changed?

  5.

And now list the costs of achieving this. How will your life be changed in a less than positive way?

  6. Who will be affected by these changes? Is this acceptable?.

  7.

What help do you need to achieve this?

  8. What is the first step you need you take to achieve this goal? And the second….third….fourth???

  9.

When are you going to take this first step?

  10. What may stop you? How can you overcome this?

  11.

How badly do you want this goal? That badly? Great!

  12. Share your goal with a friend or colleague so they can support you.

  13.

NOW DO IT!

As Bud Fox said in the film ‘Wallstreet’ –
‘Life comes down to few moments. This is one of them!’

May 2006 be your best year yet!

Best wishes
